Okay, this time I mean it. Short and sweet. Tomorrow is getaway day and I have to pack stuff up here and get on the road early in the AM. Tomorrow I drive to Picton where I drop off my rental car and return to bipedal locomotion. I then board the ferry to cross over Cook Strait to Wellington, which is at the southern tip of the North Island. It's a two hour boat ride and I will be staying right downtown in a combination hostel/hotel.
I will be in Wellington for two days and then fly back to San Francisco on Wednesday. I originally was joking about it but then I checked the times and the truth of the matter is that I am, in fact, arriving in San Francisco before I leave New Zealand.
Anyway, today started out gloomy and got really great by the end of the day. These allergies have really kicked my ass these last couple of days and I found it hard to get out of bed this morning, especially when I looked out the window and saw overcast and sporadic rain. I rolled back over and fell asleep and woke up when my body told me it was time. I think it was the best thing I could've done.
I gradually got in gear and made it out the door by noon. The clouds were starting to break up as I headed an hour north to Abel Tasman National Park. The coastal track hike normally takes 2 to 5 days with camping and I certainly had no time for that. I decided to just hike in a number of miles and then turn around. After consulting a map, it turned out that a 10 mile round-trip hike looked to be just about right.
It wore me out pretty good but I saw some fantastic sights along the way and will benefit from the exercise. After all, ski season is now upon us.
The hike is largely through coastal forest with intermittent stops at golden sand beaches. That's pretty much it. But the beaches are wild and sparsely populated, if at all. And no voracious black flies! It was pretty special and the sun came out and it didn't go away. I wish I had time to hike the entire length. Maybe another time.
Okay. That's it. No pontificating, philosophizing, rhapsodizing, or jocularising.
All for now. As usual, here are some pics from today.
