Running On Empty, Running Blind...

I'm pretty much running out of gas here. There's a reason my friend Craig makes the distinction between visiting, travel and vacation.

Visiting is what you do when you go to see family and friends for holidays. You go here and there and see everybody you haven't seen in a while and are exhausted by the end of it.

Travel is what you do when you go somewhere you've not been before and you explore, with new sights to behold every day. You go here and there and see everything you haven't ever seen and are exhausted by the end of it.

Vacation is where you sit around the beach house or the lake house, lie on the beach or at the lakefront and eat food and read a book and nap and eat food and read a book and nap.

I have not been on vacation. I have been traveling. And I'm limping to the finish line.

Got up at 6 AM in order to be on the road by 7. The 1-1/2 hour trip to the ferry actually took 2-1/2 hours, so just remember folks, when traveling abroad don't always trust the times that Google Maps gives you.

But I made it to the Picton ferry with time to spare. As the boat wended its way through the Marlborough Sounds, out into Cook Strait, I was richly entertained by the passing scenery. Once out on the open water I plopped onto a couch in the lounge and promptly dropped off to sleep. Thus no dramatic photos of Wellington Harbour as we arrived.

After getting settled in my Wellington hotel, I took a bit of a break and then did a walkabout of the Central Business District. This included a ride on an incline cable car, a walk through the Botanical Gardens and a visit to the Parliament House. Wondered around the urban core and found it nice and clean and mostly unremarkable.

Was intrigued with the historic old cemetery which has a motorway that cuts right through the middle of it. Very strange to have a pedestrian overpass over the highway that descended down into a graveyard.
Understandably, there was a bit of a brouhaha when construction of the motorway was planned.

After burning a good bit of shoe leather, I stopped and had a nice dinner of Green New Zealand mussels. Had to have them at least one night.

Resumed my walkabout after that extremely filling meal and wandered down along the waterfront to Cuba Street which is Party Central for drunk young people who like to walk around shouting. As evening closed in, I looked for candidates for some night photography but there wasn't much. It'a a pretty ordinary modern downtown. Maybe I'll find more interesting areas tomorrow night.

And that's all for now. There are a number of subjects that I still haven't gotten to but ya know, like I said, I'm sort out running on fumes. I still need to sort through photos and upload them and that'll take me until midnight. I have a special trip planned for tomorrow morning that I need to get going early for.

So with that in mind, I will end this relatively boring entry. For some reason, the internet at my hotel
is ridiculously expensive AND shitty. I'm posting this now on the evening after I wrote it, using the Free City  Wi-Fi in the Civic Centre.

As before, here are some pix from yesterday.
